So you’ve decided to use your tax return toward creating a beautiful oasis in your backyard. You want to start by putting in a brick paver patio but you aren’t exactly sure how much it will cost.

There are a few initial questions to consider when determining the cost of putting in a paver patio:

  • What materials will you be using? Both the type and quality of material affect your project’s cost.

  • Do you plan to use stone, gravel, outdoor tile or brick pavers?

  • Will you be doing it yourself, or will you hire a company to do the install? There are benefits and drawbacks to both. If it’s a DIY project, make sure to do your research ahead of time to prevent future structural issues with your patio. If you choose to pay for labor, make sure to hire a company with specific experience in paver patios, as hiring handymen and plumbers sometimes results in shifting pavers down the road.

Paver patios can cost anywhere from $16-$25/sf (and up) depending on the complexity of the project. Surprisingly, the cost/sf for smaller patios can be higher than larger ones due to the overhead cost and delivery of materials.

Other factors that can affect your cost include:

  • Added ascetics: Do you plan to implement any extra amenities, such as a fire pit?

  • Obstructions: Is there anything that needs to be taken down or moved (such as an existing deck or large tree) in order to begin the install?

  • Yard leveling: Does your yard slope, or is it severely uneven in particular spots? If so, additional labor and materials may be needed.
